Medicines and healing Arts
The Medicine of the Ancient Egyptians is some of the oldest to be discovered and documented. Over time it went largely unchanged but it was very advanced, especially considering the time. Basically, if you were ever going to get sick or unwell in Ancient Egypt, the best place to be would be in ancient Egypt. It is believed that Egyptian medicine influenced later traditions, including the Greeks.
Some of the health problems that plagued the residents of Egypt at the time have changed little since ancient times. Papyrus texts from 1500 BC lists ear infections, indigestion, headaches, hernia, gallstones, and that is only a few.
Medical knowledge in ancient Egypt had an amazing reputation. They even managed to get some surprisingly accurate knowledge of the human anatomy. They possessed considerable medical skills. Ancient Egyptian Physicians work was renowned all over the world at the time. Nevertheless, medical treatment back then was a strange mix of magic and science. In fact physicians and magicians often worked together to concoct potions to ward off evil spirits. The Physician had a number of important steps to go through. First, they tried to discover the nature of the entity that they believed was possessing the person, and then either drive it out or destroy it. This was apparently done using powerful magic, they used rituals, spells, incantations, talismans and amulets. Physical medicines such as herbs, were normally expected to prevent the pain while the magic properly cured the patient. Many of their herbal cures such as garlic, used in cooking and as a medicine are still widely used today.
Magical charms in the form of amulets were worn as protection against disease. Because Egyptians believed in an afterlife, they didn't believe that ill-health could only be gone through while living so they buried magical charms with the deceased, because they thought it would protect them in the underworld.
